Buffalo & Pittsburgh (BP)

The Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad, which is the biggest of the Genesee & Wyoming Industries railroads, started operations on July 19, 1988. It now contains about 723 miles (365 originally bought from CSX) not including trackage rights and branches, and has about 200 employees. The route was originally the backbone of the Buffalo, Rochester, and Pittsburgh Railroad (which was absorbed into the Baltimore & Ohio in 1932) and formed a "Y" between it's three namesake cities. The line today goes as far north as Buffalo, NY, and as far south as Eidenau, PA with trackage rights on CSX to New Castle, PA, its southern terminal.

The B&P has aquired operations of two other GWI roads, including the Allegheny & Eastern (ALY) [150 miles] and the Pittsburg & Shawmut (PSR) [88 miles]. With the PSR came two spinoff railroads - the Mountain Laurel (MNL) [110 miles] and the Red Bank (RB) [10 miles]. The B&P's locomotive facilities are located in Butler, PA (the main shop of the B&P), which has a six-unit enginehouse; Brookville, PA, on the old PSR; and Warren, Pa on the ALY, which has a four-unit enginehouse. All dispatching is handled in Punxsutawney, Pa.

Motive power includes high nose GP9s, nose nose GP18's, a GP35, GP40's, SW1500's, one NW2, GP38-2's, and SD45-2's and a SD40-2 rebuilt from former SP and SSW SD45's. The engines come from various owners, including N&W, NYC, SCL, C&O, B&O, PC, UP, L&N, CR, SP, SSW, and FNM. Power is pooled from other GWI railroads. - Greg Wiltsie
