Buckingham Branch RR (BB)

The Buckingham Branch Railroad is a small, family-owned shortline railroad in Central Virginia. It operates two separate lines, one being the Buckingham Division (owned by the Bryant Family) which is 17.3 miles long and runs between Dillywn and Bremo, Virginia and the other being the Shenandoah Division (owned by the Greater Shenandoah Valley Development Corp.) which is 20.2 miles long and runs between Staunton and Harrisonburg, Virginia. Interchange on the Buckingham Division is at Bremo, VA with CSX. On the Shenendoah Division with CSX at Staunton, and NS at Pleasant Valley.

Main carloads on the Buckingham Division include Kyanite ore, pulpwood, untreated railroad ties, slate, and crushed stone. On the Shenandoah Division, its liquified petroleum gas, feed ingredients, fertilizer, and lumber.

                     Buckingham Branch Operations Summary
                              (Revised 8/1/05)

The Buckingham Branch RR of Dillwyn, VA assumed operations of CSX's ex C&O
Piedmont, North Mountain, and Washington Subdivisions on December 21, 2004
at 0001 hours. This was an addition of over 200 miles to the Virginia
shortline's system, which previously totaled 16 miles from Dillwyn to Bremo Bluff, VA.

Operations on the line have settled in to a relatively stable schedule,
though as with any shortline, times can vary due to shipper needs. There
are 3 bases of operations for local trains: Doswell, Staunton, and Charlottesville.

                               Approximate schedule is as follows:
Doswell: Z626 0700 (?) yard job, may work east to Bear Island if needed.

Z628 0600 (?) east turn, usually to Bear Island Paper, sometimes further east.

Z629 0400 west turn to Louisa, swaps blocks with Z799.

Z789 as needed, empty rock to Clifton Forge, uses CSX power.
                     * Call times still uncertain on 626 and 628, estimations/previously
                       known times only.

Staunton: Z631 0300 west turn to Clifton Forge.

Z630 1500 east turn to Charlottesville.

Charlottesville: Z799 0900 east turn to Louisa.

Clifton Forge: Z790 as needed, loaded rock to Doswell (Verdon quarry),
                 uses CSX power.

All operations are Monday through Friday at this time with very occasional
weekend extras if there is left over work from the week. Z789/790 rock trains
can run at any time, including weekends. These are BB crews on CSX locomotives,
and consists can be anything from newer six axle power to older GE C30-7s.

Operations of the Dillwyn to Bremo Bluff original trackage remain unchanged,
M-W-F at 0800 out of Dillwyn. Train shoves for the entire trip from Bremo
back to Dillwyn, with a caboose/shove platform equipped with lights and horn.

Locomotive leading photographs will are best obtained on the trip up from Dillwyn.
CSX retains overhead rights on the trackage leased to the BB, and continues its
same pattern of running empty westbound coal and grain trains over the route,
sometimes as many as 4 a day. Amtrak's Cardinal continues to use the BB between
Orange and Clifton Forge, as well.

The Buckingham Branch is aggressively pursuing new business along the line,
and hopes to convince several shippers to return to rail service. An expanded
Westvaco operation on the original trackage will reportedly warrant M-F service
at a future date.
